Senate votes to proceed with impeachment trial

The Senate voted 56-44 to proceed with former President Trump’s impeachment trial yesterday, following a debate on constitutionality and whether the Senate has jurisdiction to try a former president. The vote took place largely along party lines, with six Republicans joining all 50 Democrats in favor of moving forward. Next up, the House impeachment managers will deliver their opening arguments (starting today), followed by Trump’s defense team.

Extra: Watch the opening arguments starting at 12pm ET and read a summary of what to expect in the ongoing trial.
