Raul Castro announced plans to step down as the leader of Cuba’s Communist Party, marking the end of nearly 60 years of rule by Castro and his late brother Fidel. While a successor has not yet been announced, Castro previously signaled support for 60-year-old Miguel Díaz-Canel (who succeeded him as president in 2018).
