Georgia approves new election law

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed a sweeping election bill into law yesterday. The legislation addresses a wide range of voting-related topics (including mail-in ballots and early and absentee voting) and was passed along party lines in Georgia’s Republican-controlled state legislature this week.

More context: Proponents of the bill (including Kemp) cited a desire to ensure elections are “secure, fair, and accessible.” Critics suggested that the legislation would make it harder to vote and may disproportionately impact certain voters (including people of color).
