The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was deployed in response to a recent surge in unaccompanied migrant children at the US-Mexico border. FEMA will work over the next 90 days to “receive, shelter, and transfer” unaccompanied children crossing at the southwestern border.
More context: The announcement follows reports of over 3,000 children being held at US immigration facilities, some of which have been held beyond the typical three-day limit due to capacity issues at HHS facilities.
