China enacts changes to Hong Kong legislature

China enacted several changes to Hong Kong’s legislature, reducing the number of directly elected seats from 35 to 20, increasing the total number of seats from 70 to 90, and requiring potential candidates to be vetted by a new committee. The measures mark the latest action taken by China in the wake of pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong last year, including a controversial national security law that critics say ended Hong Kong’s autonomy from China.
