Violence escalates in Northern Ireland

Violence in Northern Ireland escalated this week, due in part to post-Brexit tensions between British loyalist Protestant and Irish nationalist Catholic communities. The region saw several decades of violence (known as “the Troubles”) leading up to the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, and tensions have resurfaced between those in favor of remaining part of the UK and those who are seeking unity with Ireland.
