US announces sanctions on Russia over Navalny

The US announced sanctions on Russia in response to the poisoning and imprisonment of opposition leader Alexei Navalny. The sanctions were announced in coordination with the EU and include a suspension of foreign assistance, arms sales, certain exports, and other financial assistance for a wide range of Russian officials and entities.

More context: Navalny was arrested in January for alleged probation violations after returning from Germany (where he was recovering after being poisoned by a nerve agent last August). Critics have suggested that the charges were politically motivated, and his arrest prompted tens of thousands of protesters to gather across Russia in January.
