UN holds global climate summit

The United Nations held a “Climate Ambition Summit” on Saturday, with heads of state representing over 70 governments gathering on the fifth anniversary of the Paris climate accord. The summit covered a wide range of climate change-related topics, with the UN noting that 24 countries announced new commitments to reach carbon neutrality.

More context: The Paris accord was adopted by 188 nations in 2015 in a global effort to combat climate change. The US formally withdrew from the agreement last month after initiating the year-long process last November (citing an “unfair economic burden” placed on US citizens). President-elect Biden pledged to rejoin the agreement on Saturday.
