The Senate confirmed Alejandro Mayorkas as Secretary of Homeland Security and Pete Buttigieg as Secretary of Transportation yesterday.
- Mayorkas previously served as Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security under the Obama administration and is the first Latino to lead the DHS. He was confirmed by a 56-43 vote, marking the narrowest margin of the six cabinet members that have been confirmed thus far.
- Buttigieg previously served as the Mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and ran as a Democratic presidential candidate in the 2020 primaries. He is the first openly gay Cabinet member to be confirmed by the Senate and is expected to play a central role in the Biden administration’s infrastructure efforts. He was confirmed by a margin of 86-13.
