Niger holds general elections

Niger held presidential and legislative elections yesterday, paving the way for the West African nation’s first democratic transition of power since it gained independence from France in 1960. A total of 30 candidates ran in the presidential election, and results are expected to be released in the coming days. If none of the candidates secure at least 50% of the vote, a second vote will be held in February.
