Singapore becomes first country to approve lab-grown meat product

Singapore granted approval for a “cultured chicken” product made by US-based food company Eat Just, marking the first time that a government has granted regulatory approval for a lab-grown meat product (according to the company’s press release). The company will partner with local manufacturers in Singapore for production and did not provide a timeline for its ultimate release to restaurants and end-consumers.

More context: The approval comes amid rapid growth in the meat alternative segment, including widely-available plant-based options (made by companies such as Beyond Meat) as well as more nascent lab-grown alternatives.
