US announces new set of sanctions on Iran

The Treasury Department announced a series of sanctions on Iran yesterday. The sanctions target the Iranian Minister of Intelligence and Security (related to human rights abuses) and a foundation allegedly used by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei to “enrich his office, reward his political allies, and persecute the regime’s enemies.”

More context: The announcement marks the latest in a “Maximum Pressure” campaign against Iran that aims to combat “malign behavior that continues to emanate from the Iranian regime.” Secretary of State Pompeo issued a statement supporting the ongoing sanctions yesterday.
