Acting DHS Secretary Wolf resigns

Acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf resigned yesterday, citing “recent events,” including ongoing court rulings related to the validity of his authority as Acting Secretary. Wolf did not provide additional detail on his decision, and he will be succeeded by FEMA Administrator Pete Gaynor.

More context: A federal judge ruled in November that the DHS “failed to follow the order of succession as it was lawfully designated” when Wolf assumed the role.

Extra: Wolf is the third cabinet-level member to resign in the last week. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos separately resigned following last week’s attack on the US capitol (which was not referenced in Wolf’s resignation letter).
