US Customs announces ban on cotton, tomato imports from Xinjiang region in China

US Customs and Border Protection announced a ban on cotton and tomato imports from the Xinjiang region in China, citing information that “reasonably indicates the use of detainee or prison labor and situations of forced labor.” The announcement marks the latest US action related to the detention of over 1M Uyghur Muslims in the region, including bipartisan legislation passed last year.

More context: China has repeatedly denied international claims of human rights violations and issued a statement today calling for the US to lift the new restrictions.
