A team of researchers in China claimed to have achieved “quantum advantage” in a paper published last week in the academic journal Science (source). The scientists claimed that their photon-based quantum computer performed a computation (called boson sampling) in minutes that would have taken classical computers 2.5 billion years to complete.
Extra: The announcement comes amid intense focus on the quantum computing space by a wide range of public and private institutions, including Google (which claimed to have achieved quantum supremacy last year).
