Biden calls for end of military coup in Myanmar, threatens sanctions
President Biden issued a statement calling for Myanmar’s military to end its coup and restore power to the democratically-elected government, suggesting that the US may consider reimposing sanctions if the military retains control. Myanmar's military staged a coup yesterday, detaining several top officials and declaring a year-long state of emergency after a November election that it claims was fraudulent. Myanmar’s election commission has rejected the claims, and the coup has drawn widespread international condemnation.
