A work by the digital artist known as Beeple sold for over $69M at Christie's auction house yesterday. The piece was sold as an NFT (a “non-fungible token”), a blockchain-based tool used to verify ownership and authenticity of digital assets. NFTs have surged in popularity in recent months, with a wide range of digital assets (including digital art, tweets, and video clips) using the technology.
Extra: The sale positioned Beeple among the “top three most valuable living artists” according to Christie’s. See the digital work (titled “The First 5000 Days”) here.
