Australian media company Seven West announced a partnership with Google to provide news content for Google’s News Showcase product. The announcement comes as Australian lawmakers consider new legislation that would require Google and other tech companies (e.g. Facebook) to pay news publishers for the content shared on their platforms.
More context: Regulators proposed the new law last year, citing bargaining power imbalances between tech platforms and news publishers. Google has been highly critical of the proposed legislation and suggested in January that it could stop making Google Search available in Australia if the law takes effect.
